As per Schroth (2019)

  • we've got a new generation hitting the workforce that's totally different from what managers are used to.
Main problem?
  • Gen Z kids have way less work experience than previous generations did at their age, plus they're dealing with more anxiety/depression and have been shaped by smartphones and social justice movements.
  • They're coming in with high expectations but limited workplace skills.
The article doesn't just complain about the problem though - it actually gives
practical solutions:

  • be super clear about job expectations upfront, create detailed onboarding processes, teach communication skills directly, and provide more emotional support than you might think necessary.
  • There's good evidence backing up both the problems (higher anxiety rates, less work experience) and the solutions (growth mindset approaches, coaching techniques).
  • Bottom line: Gen Z is different, but if you adjust your management style - especially around feedback, support and skill development - you can tap into their strengths like diversity appreciation and tech skills while helping them develop the workplace capabilities they're missing.
